Like any makeup, its all in the application. Some days my Bare Minerals looked great because I took the time, some days if I was rushing, it looked awful. The main reason that its better than foundtation for people with bad skin is that Bare Minerals doesn't contain mineral oil and several other ingredients that clog the pores. It also contains titanium dioxide which works as a sunscreen. I have awful acne scars on my face, and while it doesn't completely obliterate them, it does look better than a thick layer of foundation. Its good for those that aren't into heavy makeup or those who wouldn't normally wear any.
It's basically a refined loose powder that you use as foundation.
It gives light coverage and doesn't look cakey because it's just powder that brushes off pretty easily instead of sticking and melting. It smoothes your skin tone somewhat and some contain little sparkly bits to add 'glow'.
I find Lily Lolo's to be the best.
